I enjoyed reading this book. It is heartwarming to read and to see how a child survived a parent's mental illness. It always shows how treatment was years ago. Those years were tough in the 30's but gave us a lot of responsible adults like Joan. We can survive!!Product details

Growing Up in the '30s Joann Tiemeyer Bell 9781503357112 Books Reviews
I recently had the pleasure of reading this book by MS Bell. What wonderful memories it recreated for me written in a concise and pleasurable style. For any of us born in the 1930's or 1940's it is a must delightful read
I was born in 1939 and grew up on a farm. I can relate to many of the situations Joann describes in her book. Some were good
and some were not. By today's standards, we had difficult childhoods, but, as children, we weren't aware of it. It was a tough
time in rural America. Joann has described it well. I loved her book.
A wonderful collection of well written short essays that depict the authors childhood in the 30's. Her stories are honest and hit on sensitive topics such as mental illness, racism and poverty. Yet, despite what in today's world would be considered a tough upbringing, the stories are peppered with wonderful evocative memories such as the taste of freshly cranked ice cream and the intense love that a child has for their first pet.
I'd love to read more!!
Joann's book brings back a flood of memories about growing up on a farm in the '30's (and 40's). Joann is my 1st cousin, and she and her best friend, Marilyn Salfrank, were the pretty, more "grown-up" cousins. Joann and I shared the fact that our dads were Missouri farmers and our mothers were schoolteachers. The fact that her mom suffered from a mental illness was hardly mentioned in the family. It was very hush-hush. Thankfully, today's attitudes regarding mental illness, as well as racial discrimination, have come a long, long way. Even though times were tough financially, we children were able to find joy in the farm animals and everyday living. After beginning this book, I couldn't put it down until its completion.
I enjoyed the book and the story of life in the 30's
